The Hoosiers chat to I Like Music :

Following hot on the heels of Worried About Ray, one of the undisputed soundtracks of the short lived summer (8 consecutive weeks top 10 says it all) comes the next floor filling single from The Hoosiers, Goodbye Mr A. Both The Hoosiers and ilikemusic.com were nominated at this year's BT Digital Music Awards (us for Best Music Magazine - NME won, them for Best Pop Artist - Nat Bedingfield won) so we caught up with The Hoosiers at the BT DMAs to talk about their new single and have a singalong.

ILM: Goodbye Mr A is set for release October 8th, please tell us about that track, it's vibe and how it came about…?

IRWIN: Well, we tried to set out to make the best song in the world ever, but apparently that had already been written so we wrote the second…

ALFONSO: third …

IRWIN: … third best song…

IRWIN: We also wanted to write a song about the man who new everything, because we had the idea for the album that it's this fairytale world with pixies and elves, and loads of characters from our songs inhabit the world.

ALFONSO: One of which is Mr A, who works it all out.

IRWIN: But he goes mad with his own power. Because he corrects everyone, but nobody wants to know their faults, because then the world becomes a very complicated place and less happy. So it's that thing of how everyone knows someone who knows too much.

ALFONSO: All wrapped up in a big fat pop tune.

ILM: Worried About Ray is another great tune. On the album, which track was the most fun to record?

IRWIN: Soul Exchange. [Laughs] It's a song that will probably never see the light of day, it might be a bside. It was just a mish mash, we threw everything at it, so there was a real feeling of freedom. We used strings, brass, percussion and some odd instruments… name some Martin; go!

MARTIN: Vacordotron Synth, Morumbabi…

IRWIN: And what's that string thing we used in Rabbit… Run Rabbit Run?

MARTIN: Dolcima Machino

ALFONSO: And I do guest rap.

IRWIN: And we've got a clarinet soloist, it was freaking out all over the shop.

ILM: I wanna hear this song!

IRWIN: It's mad. It's a marmite track and everyone hated it.

[
The Hoosiers start to demonstrate the song and start clapping, beatboxing, doing sound effects, toe tapping, singing…]

ALFONSO: That's amazing!

IRWIN: We should have just done it acapella. Does it work? That's our encore.

ILM: Brilliant. Wow, I enjoyed that. It needs to be on the next album, surely. Now… we were both nominated and there's a lot about independent artists and websites using the internet to get out there. Discuss…

IRWIN: The good thing about the internet, regardless of what you're trying to achieve or what songs you've got, you need some major muscle behind you to do the whole marketing thing. You can put things up on the internet, but nobody knows you're there, so it's just bringing yourself into the public consciousness, that does take advertising and when you're a band you just want to play your music, so you need help, but if it's good enough you'll get there.

ILM: Our website is called ilikemusic.com. Please can you finish this sentence: I like music because…

ALFONSO: I like music because… dot com

MARTIN: I like music because… it's more fun than skiing.

ILM: That's one of our best ones!

ALFONSO: I've got a better one...

IRWIN: I'll go next, because I think it's not as good as yours and it'll make yours even better.

IRWIN: I like music because… it makes me feel warm on the inside, even when I'm a bit chilly on the outside.

ILM: No pressure Al, but yours now has to be excellent.

ALFONSO: I like music because… because, because, because, because of the wonderful things he does… I'm off to see the wizard…[singing] the wonderful wizard of oz…

We all crack up. Alfonso indeed has the best one. I like
The Hoosiers. They're fun!
