UK, September 27, 2007 - For the past few years, alongside concentrating on scoring a top notch football experience for its FIFA games, EA Sports has also been busy securing a range of high profile groups and musicians for the series' soundtrack. This year's no different, with FIFA 08 featuring a track listing that includes Art Brut, CSS, Maximo Park and British rockers The Hoosiers.
In fact, EA Sports was so taken with the upbeat Hoosiers that it's chosen their upcoming single Goodbye Mr. A as the lead track on the game, with brief snippets of the latest FIFA appearing in one of the band's videos. So, as part of our FIFA week we chatted exclusively to Irwin, Martin and Alphonso from The Hoosiers about the band's deal with EA Sports and a whole bunch more.
IGN: Firstly, how did the collaboration between you and EA come about?
Irwin: Someone from EA Sports came to one of our gigs when we supported The Fray and really liked us. They met us afterwards to see if we were interested in working with them and we jumped at the chance. The fact that Alph and I spent a year failing at a footy scholarship in Indiana made it all the sweeter!
IGN: Are you excited that you've been chosen as the featured band in FIFA 08?
Martin: So much so that even I've broken a smile. It's a real honour to be the featured band in the UK and we're enjoying working with them. Both parties wanted this to be more than simply being a track in the game so it's been great. We recently played on their Hub at the V Festival and played at the GameStation conference to an audience that was entirely in fancy dress. If only we could make fancy dress compulsory at every gig.
IGN: Have you always been big FIFA fans? What's the first edition of FIFA you played?
Martin: I'm the biggest 'gay-mer' and have always lapped up FIFA like a thirsty cat would'st a bowl of milk.
Alphonso: The first one I played would have been FIFA 2005 (I think) and I've bought every version since - although this time I got FIFA 08 for free, which is a bit of tease as I still don't own a console! I'm pulling your leg, of course. EA sorted us with a 360 and PS3 so we're laughing and have way too much choice.
IGN: Do you play the game a lot together? What about while you're on tour, do you relax before going on stage with a quick game of FIFA?
Irwin: We don't have too much time off, which we're very grateful for, but whenever we find a console we'll get a mini-tournament on the go. We're very competitive and love placing obscure bets on a game. Martin once had to go without food for a week after losing a game. That's a lie.
IGN: Who's the best FIFA player in the band?
Alphonso: I think we'd all agree that it's definitely me, although people's second and third favourite Hoosiers are improving under my tutorage. We've just received our copies of FIFA 08 so I'm working on some of the skill moves so I can remain undefeated.
IGN: If there was a FIFA 08 World Cup just for bands, do you think you'd get to the final and who would you like to play against? Do you reckon you would win?
Martin: Probably the Gorillaz as they're practically computer-generated already so have an unfair advantage over us mortals. Give us two more months on the road and we'll see them in the final. We can't wait to play some bands for real on the footy pitch. We've got an itch for a pitch.
IGN: What do you think of FIFA 08?
Alphonso: We received it a couple of days ago so we haven't had too much time to play it. We played at the Games Convention in Leipzig and we were shown the PS3 version over which I was moved to tears, whilst Irwin expressed his awe through an impromptu sonnet, ah, typical Sparkes. The Be a Pro mode is owner of the coveted 'Alphonso's Two Thumbs-Up' award, though I'm having problems sticking to my position, lest it be said that I don't know my failings!
IGN: Have you got any favourite teams you all play as or do you just end up playing as the teams you support in real-life? What teams do you support?
Irwin: I'm a Reading fan so the less said about that the better. We had a great season last year but we've just not got off to a good start. If you look closely at the Goodbye Mr A video you'll see me playing and scoring as Reading when I should be busy fighting crime.
Alphonso: I'm an Exeter fan so I have even less to shout about. I've asked EA Sports if they will put the Conference in next year but I'm not holding my breath. If you're interested, I'm holding a coke-float and a worm-farm.
Martin: I don't support a British team but my club is Djurgrden from my motherland in Sweden.
IGN: Are you big videogame fans? If so, what's your favourite videogame of all time? (You don't have to say FIFA!)
Alphonso: You know at least two thirds of us actually are which is why we really wanted to do this. FIFA makes me warm inside no matter the weather but if I was pushed I'd say Tiger Woods PGA Tour 08.
Irwin: We were shown Rock Band recently and that looks like it's going to be great fun. I'm also quite a classics kind of fop: bit of Space-Invaders and Pac-Man and I'm beaming.
IGN: If you could star in any other type of game, what would it be? What about a Hoosiers beat-'em-up?
Irwin: That would just be insane. How cool would that be to have our own game? We'll ask EA and see what they say. It would take a very stretched imagination; what would be my special move? The Chinese Burn, I suspect. Alph can handle himself with his feared "back rake and hair-pull" combo. Terrifying.
IGN: Do you think that popular music plays an important role in videogames?
Martin: More and more it's playing a major part in the experience, bringing it closer to real life and it enables gamers/button-pushers to hear music from bands they might not come across via radio or MTV. We've been told that FIFA sells well over 1.5 million in the UK alone so there is the potential to turn some, and hopefully all, of them into fans of The Hoosiers.
Alphonso: Since the internet, music is everywhere and the opportunities for getting your tunage out there are nigh on endless. Thing is, people still need to know where to look for it and games are becoming one of the sources.
IGN: Are you planning on featuring anymore EA games in future videos?
Irwin: We're all about bending, swerving and curving so if EA bend, swerve or curve at the same time then who knows!
Alphonso: Of course they'll be our Hoosiers beat-'em-up, starring me as a Devonshire gator-wrestler; a dying breed. I'm still pushing to be in the next Tiger game. I'd make a great hidden character.
